Alzheimer's disease

A progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to the destruction of brain neurons, loss of memory, cognitive functions, and the ability to live independently.
Alzheimer's disease develops due to the pathological accumulation of toxic proteins in the brain – beta-amyloid and tau protein. They form neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques that destroy connections between neurons and lead to their death. This causes a progressive deterioration of cognitive functions, starting with short-term memory disorders and ending with a complete loss of the ability to exist independently. In the early stages, patients have difficulty remembering recent events, forget words, and have trouble concentrating. As the disease progresses, self-care skills are lost, spatial orientation worsens, behavioral disorders and aggression appear. In the final stage, the patient completely loses the ability to speak, move and control the physiological functions of the body.

Reasons

Age (people over 65 are most affected)

Hereditary predisposition

Vascular diseases (hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus)

Traumatic brain injuries

Symptoms

Prementia is a slight memory impairment, loss of interest in life, and decreased concentration.

Early dementia – difficulty speaking, problems with word selection, impaired motor skills.

Moderate dementia is a loss of orientation in space, forgetting loved ones, illogical behavior, aggression, emotional swings.

Severe dementia is a complete dependence on others, loss of the ability to speak, eat, and control physiological functions.

Consequences

As the disease progresses, the patient loses the ability to live independently and becomes completely dependent on the help of others. Impaired motor function leads to physical inactivity, pressure sores, and muscle atrophy. Due to loss of swallowing control, aspiration pneumonia may develop. In the late stages, patients need round-the-clock monitoring.

Treatment

alt
Conservative treatment
Treatment of Alzheimer's disease is aimed at slowing down degenerative processes in the brain and relieving symptoms. Medications are prescribed that allow you to stabilize cognitive functions for a while. Additionally, medications are used to correct anxiety, aggression, and behavioral disorders. Psychosocial therapy plays an important role in patient support. Art therapy, cognitive training, and music therapy help slow down the loss of cognitive skills and improve emotional well-being. Physical activity is also important, which helps improve blood circulation and slow down muscle atrophy.
